Antique Floral Painting on Paper with Miniature Portrait, Circa Mid 19th Century

Antique Floral Painting on Paper with Miniature Portrait, Circa Mid 19th Century
Antique Floral Painting on Paper with Miniature Portrait, Circa Mid 19th Century. A fanciful display of roses in full bloom with vibrant turquoise bluets is rendered in watercolor and oil on paper. A central figure looks as though it’s being birthed from a rose. The vibrant green leaves and buds of the roses look almost alien-like with protruding hairs and thorns. The areas of watercolor have softened and faded over time, while the oil paint remains bright. Framed in a cream and gilt wood frame. Unsigned, artist unknown.
Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2025.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with minimal surface wear and variation. Tinting of paper color present with areas of foxing. The watercolor paint used for the roses and figure has beautifully faded over time, while the oil paints used for the leaves, stems and blue flowers remain vibrant. This piece may have been re-framed later in life.
