Rare Vintage Large-Scale Puerto Rican Pottery Corp. Glazed Vessel with Incised Motifs, Circa 1950s
Rare Vintage Large-Scale Puerto Rican Pottery Corp. Glazed Vessel with Incised Motifs, Circa 1950s. Molded cylindrical body glazed in a wash of celadon, olive, navy and indigo. Before firing, the surface was carved with repeat leaf-like and ticked motifs. The interior of this vessel is also fully glazed in an ombre spanning celadon to washed denim blue. Signed on the underside of the base “Puerto Rican Pottery Corp.” A central hole at the base allows for drainage as a planter. This piece also works well as a large scale vase, or waste bin.
Puerto Rican Pottery Corp. was one of two potteries that established mid-century production of ceramics in Puerto Rico. The company operated from 1948–1966 in Santurce. It was a small government run and federally funded pottery that created hand-built and decorated works produced by young artisans. The workroom was initially headed by Edwin & Mary Scheier, and later by master potter Hal Lasky. Although all pieces were molded, not thrown, each piece was individually designed, painted, and wood-fired.
After moving to the island in 1968, renowned ceramicist Susana Espinosa began her work with this same studio.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minimal surface wear. A couple very small flea-bite chips concentrated to the raised edges of the carved motifs (barely visible and does not detract from the overall look).
