Rare Brazilian Gerson Bahia Silver and Wood Mano Figa Pair, Circa 1940s. Large Figa is stamped “Gerson Bahia” on the underside of the 900 silver base. The sculptures each have silver fingernail details and coil bracelets. The large piece was produced by Gerson, a jewelry designer from Bahia, Brazil. The smaller work is unsigned.

The origins of the gesture of the thumb protruding between the pointer finger and middle finger has history dating back nearly 8,000 years. Mano” means hand and “Figa” means fig, a slang term for female genitalia. In ancient times it was worn as an incantation to The Goddess, a call for fertility, virility and good times. In the early 17th century, the symbol began to be produced in South America and is commonly worn as a symbol of protection against the evil eye.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Small Figa is missing one silver fingernail.
