Antique Folk Art Vernacular Farmhouse Polychrome Shell Model, Circa Early 20th Century

$3,198.00

Antique Folk Art Vernacular Farmhouse Polychrome Shell Model, Circa Early 20th Century. Modeled after an existing late-1800’s vernacular farmhouse with a high-pitched roof, this monumental piece is constructed from a pine base adorned with hundreds of hand-painted, natural shells. Shells include: periwinkle, slipper snails, and dog whelk. Slight traces of earlier layers of paint reveal this piece was previously painted green and white, with later additions of deep red and dark paint on the roof. Substantial in scale and material, the artist masterfully executed the details with a working, hinged door, glass windows and remnants of interior printed wallpaper. A paper calendar from New Jersey, 1903 was used as material for the interior construction. Sourced in the Maritimes. Artist unknown.

Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2025.

Condition: Excellent antique condition considering its age. Areas of shell breaks and losses do not detract from the overall look (as pictured). Presents areas of surface finish variation.

Specs: 26 1/4" Total Height | 26 1/4" Length | 17" Depth

Due to the scale of the house, this piece is available for local delivery and pick-up within the NYC area. For Shipping Inquiries, please reach out to :info@portmanteaunewyork.com
