Vintage Mounted Bronze Sculpture by Herbert Kallem Titled, "Toy Solider 7," Circa 1954. Brutalist, abstract sculpture of a toy soldier rendered mid-march, with one leg raised and the other grounded. The bronze figure is constructed utilizing welding and cold connection with use of visible rivets. The figurative work is sculpted from slender cuts of bronze with the uniform encircling the body. The toy solider is welded to a plate of bronze where the artist has signed, “Kallem 54.” The sculpture is mounted to a trapezoidal wood plinth base. Handwritten label on the underside noting, “Toy Soldier 7.”

Born in 1909 in Philadelphia, Herbert Kallem moved to New York City where he spent most of his career as a sculptor and art teacher at the School of Visual Arts and New York University. He studied at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, and the Hans Hofmann School. His works were exhibited in venues and galleries such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, and Carnegie Institute. Solo exhibitions were held at the Roko, Davis, and John Heller Galleries, as well as the Hudson Park Library. Though Kallem created paintings and drawings throughout his life, he was primarily a sculptor and an active member of the Sculptor’s Guild, where he served as President from 1974 to 1976.
