A Santo Figure (Saint) is a religious art form found in Spain and areas that were colonies of the Kingdom of Spain, consisting of wooden or ivory statues that depict various saints. In the Caribbean, drawing on Taíno traditions of carved idols, the Spanish missionaries started the tradition in the 16th century pushing to have Christian saints to pray to in homes.
Likely of Latin American origins, with similar examples coming from Guatemala. This work is hand-carved, painted in layers of cobalt, vibrant yellow, black, and red with areas of visible wood. This figure depicts a Saint wearing a robe with incised and painted motifs.
The charm of these pieces is in the visible history that can be seen especially in the hand-carved details and visible layers of paint applied through the years of use. The Santos held a special place in the home and were often passed down through generations. Villages often had one family known for carving these pieces. By details and style, they can sometimes be attributed to specific makers or families.
Galería Botello in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico is an excellent resource for viewing and appreciation of these works of art.
