Antique French Conscience Yellow Glazed Pottery Vessel, Circa Mid 19th Century

$698.00

Antique French Conscience Yellow Glazed Pottery Vessel, Circa Mid 19th Century. Bulbous bottle form with a central spout at the top. This pottery jug is glazed ochre with varying tones achieved through time and use. The four loops along the sides add a graphic element to the vessel though originally intended for threading rope to transport water or oil. Likely from Provence/south of France. These utilitarian vessels got their name due to the fact that monks would rely on an individual’s “conscience” to give oil or water for the needy. Unsigned.

SPECS: 9 5/8" H | 6 3/4" W (handle to handle) | 4 7/8" base diameter | 7/8" mouth opening
