Vintage "the Male Figure" Male Physique Beefcake Magazine Volume 25, Circa 1962
Vintage "the Male Figure" Male Physique Beefcake Magazine Volume 25, Circa 1962. “the Male Figure” was produced by Bruce Bellas, aka Bruce of Los Angeles, a pioneer in physique photography. The cover draws the reader’s attention to the perfectly toned model in well-fitting swimwear against a dark backdrop. On the reverse is another speedo-clad model standing proudly in front of a brick wall. The vivid use of color in print was a newly adopted concept which was used selectively on the cover and center spread. Issues from the 1960s easily prove that progress had been made in terms of modesty and nude photography, with more bare and suggestive pictorials. Readers could also order Kodachrome movies of the featured models. This particular issue notably features a black model, Chuck Wood. Includes a full-color centerfold and accompanying spread of model, David Zurborg. Originally purchased for .60 cents, this format is rare to find in this condition.
Beefcake magazines presented as dedicated to fitness, health, and bodybuilding. However, their unstated primary purpose was erotic imagery, for gay and bisexual men and straight women, skirting mid-20th-century censorship laws which prohibited depiction of full nudity, and cultural taboos against homosexuality.
