Antique Pennsylvania Dutch Trompe L'Oeil Book Box, Circa 1793
Antique Pennsylvania Dutch Trompe L'Oeil Book Box, Circa 1793
Antique Pennsylvania Dutch Trompe L'Oeil Book Box, Circa 1793. The body of this piece is constructed from pine with small wood pegs joining all sections. All sides of the box feature carved medallion “hex” designs, typical of pieces made by Pennsylvania Dutch communities. Constructed to look like a bound book, it’s very likely this box would have been used for storage of candles or valuables. Partial original deep green paint can be found on two sides, with the date 1793 in gold along the “spine”. The lid is designed to slide open, and may have had a small pull at one time. Unsigned.
Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2024.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Retains partial original paint on two sides. It’s unclear when the surface paint was removed on some sides, but each still retains all original surface carvings.
