Antique Bentwood Storage Box with Hand-Painted Bird Motif, Circa Early 20th Century
Antique Bentwood Storage Box with Hand-Painted Bird Motif, Circa Early 20th Century. Constructed from four pieces of wood, with the sides of the lid and base bent around oval structures with lapped seams. The full surface of this piece is covered with delightful bird and flower motifs, very reminiscent of Pennsylvania Dutch Fraktur drawings. The top of the lid presents a singular bird painted in greater detail than those around the body, in shades of burgundy, ochre and blue. It’s beak slightly open, it faces towards a singular flower. The body is covered in varying sizes of simplistic bird illustrations. The style of the box is also reminiscent of traditional Pennsylvania Dutch bridal boxes. Unsigned.
Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2024.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. A couple small areas of surface abrasion and very small cracks (does not detract from the overall striking appearance of the piece).
