Vintage Susana Espinosa Cat Face Ceramic Plate, Circa 1980s
Vintage Susana Espinosa Cat Face Ceramic Plate, Circa 1980s
Rare Vintage Susana Espinosa Cat Face Ceramic Plate, Circa 1980s. This shallow square plate is designed around the central face of a cat, rendered in shades of tan, brown and flecks of white. The multi-dimensional surface design is achieved by carving into the clay to create a line drawing, on top of which glaze is then applied. The ground of the piece is glazed in a satin white. Espinosa’s signature can be found to the right of the cat’s face. Designed to be hung on a wall rather than for utilitarian use.
Ceramicist and draftswoman, Espinosa currently lives and works in Puerto Rico, well known for her countless ceramic mural commissions around the island. Espinosa is reputably Puerto Rico’s most important Modernist potter. She has belonged to the International Academy of Ceramics since 1989 and her work has won medals and honorable mentions at many international events. Her work is part of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico, Museum of Latin American Art, among many others.
