Antique Leather Trompe L'Oeil Chess + Backgammon Box, Circa Late 19th Century/Early 20th Century
Antique Leather Trompe L'Oeil Chess + Backgammon Box, Circa Late 19th Century. A cleverly disguised game box hidden within a set of faux books, titled along the spines, “History of England” Volumes 1 and 2. The body is made of soft wood fully covered in leather. The makers managed to replicate every detail of a book’s design, even incorporating marbled paper details along faux pages and embossed foil motifs along the spine. The exterior opens to a full chess/checkers board with the backgammon board rendered on the interior. This box set would have originally housed chess pieces, checkers, shakers and die. An exceptional decorative piece as an addition to a coffee table, credenza or bookshelf. Unbranded.
Condition: Good antique condition, presents signs of wear throughout commensurate with age and loving use. Areas of separation along seams. As pictured. Possibly used to house some sort of archive, or was itself part of a collection (stamped “Archives” on the interior).
