Vintage Hand-Painted Wood "STRAWBERRIES" and "RIVERWAE" Signs, Circa 1920s-50s
Vintage Hand-Painted Wood "STRAWBERRIES" and "RIVERWAE" Signs, Circa 1920s-50s. Likely constructed from pine, each single-board sign boasts a sawtooth detail on the ends.
The “STRAWBERRIES” sign is double-sided with a deep forest green ground and cream hand-painted lettering. Circa 1950s. Pencil lines are still visible on the surface, for planning letter placement and spacing. Original hanging hardware is no longer in place, and has been replaced with period correct o-rings.
The “RIVERWAE” sign is single-sided with a cream ground and bold black lettering, both beautifully weathered by the elements. Circa 1920s. The ground shows the wood grain through the surface paint. The majority of the original hanging hardware is intact, with four links of wrought iron chain on one side. The spelling of the word “Riverwae” is especially intriguing here, as we haven’t found any references similar. It’s possible this was a colloquial reference to the name of an actual river.
