Vintage Finnish Carved Bas-Relief Portrait, Circa 1930s-40s
Vintage Finnish Carved Bas-Relief Portrait, Circa 1930s-40s. This three-dimensional portrait was hand carved on Klobbol wood with its bark-clad edge left intact. Two Finnish artists, K. Rissanen and T. Alikyla, developed this style of carving during the Russo-Finnish war in 1939. Carved with a trench knife to create a unique and life-like quality, the applied color and shading was produced by means of burning with a small torch. The figure’s eyes are especially mesmerizing. Signed “Helios / T Jaakkola” in the lower left.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Small areas of surface abrasion, light water stains, and small losses to bark edge (as detailed in images.)
