Antique Polychrome Carved Wood Cherub Wall Sculpture, Circa Late 19th Century. This finely carved polychrome wood cherub holds a small guitar/mandolin. Likely produced for use in a church, the sculpture is carved and gessoed with over-paint, gilding and inset glass eyes, only fragments of the glass eyes remain. Rendered as if in mid-flight with wings outstretched, clutching their instrument. Unsigned.
Condition: Great antique condition. Overall surface patina and paint craquelure commensurate with age. Light losses to painted surface, fragments of glass eyes present, and losses to a few wood fingers on the cherub’s left hand (as detailed in images).
