Antique Tooled Pizzle Leather Dog/Seal Riding Crop, Circa 19th Century

Antique Tooled Pizzle Leather Dog/Seal Riding Crop, Circa 19th Century

$898.00

Antique Tooled Pizzle Leather Dog/Seal Riding Crop, Circa 19th Century. Obscure folk art tooled riding crop constructed from pizzle (penis) leather likely from a bull. The use of this material can been seen in riding crops and canes from the 19th century, but a form this detailed is quite rare. The majority of these styles are often simple, with the maker of this piece paying very special attention to the head detailing and applied contrast leather collar. Likely formed to resemble a dog or seal pup. A true oddity. Unsigned.

Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2024.

Condition: Good antique condition considering age and use. Small loss to one ear, a very small section of the collar and the end of the crop. One small repair to the lower portion of the crop. In its day, it would have likely been more flexible for use.

Specs: 24” H | 2 1/4” D | 1 3/8” W
