Vintage Spinning Mill Occupational Diorama, Circa 1940s-1950s
Vintage Spinning Mill Occupational Diorama, Circa 1940s-1950s. A very rare find, this piece was likely mounted as part of a spinning mill display highlighting the production process at the facility. Constructed primarily from plywood, carved solid wood and etched glass, the interior components are completely hand-painted in shades of dusty blue, green, yellow and cream. A master work of forced perspective, this piece tricks the eye, making the interior scene appear much deeper. A snapshot from daily life in the factory, two carved figures stand actively engaged in the spinning process, a wood crate full of completed spools at the forefront. The face of the diorama retains its original glass, with the word “Spinning” etched on the reverse. A finished spool example rests within the interior, further highlighting the facility’s production capacity. Very similar to the production set up at the Dan River Spinning Mill in Danville, Virginia, the final image is included for reference. Unsigned.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition considering its age. There is natural wear throughout with small areas of missing paint, staining (interior floor), and a small crack in the glass (lower right). We have replaced the dowel on the base of the spool sample allowing it to remain in place. All condition details have been recorded within images.
