$398.00

Antique Photograph of a First Nations Village on Little Diomede Island, Alaska, Circa 1923. Situated in northwestern Alaska, the island is know locally as “Ignaluk.” This lively, sepia-tone image shows a small village with structures in the background. The cropped scene brings the viewer directly into the happenings of the day, with a central figure looking directly at the camera. Other figures, children and dogs appear to be at work constructing canoes. An inscription on the verso reads “For A. Brown Compliment on Arthur Erde. (N) Illegible Alaska. Village at Little Diomede Is. in the Bering Straits.” Signed “Copyright AE 23” within the image lower left, in white.

Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2024.
