Vintage Greek Black + White Photo of the Statue of Nike by Paionios, Circa 1940s
Vintage Greek Black + White Photo of the Statue of Nike by Paionios, Circa 1940s. The original statue was placed on a pedestal atop the Temple of Zeus and discovered by a German excavation group at Olympia in 1875. The statue of Nike, the winged goddess of victory, was sculpted by Paionios, from Mende in the Chalkidike, as a thank-offering. The work was presented by the Messenians and Naupactians, in about 421 BC, out of the spoils of their victory over the Spartans in the Archidamean War. Printed on photo paper, the image also includes the title of the work at the bottom left and, what we assume to be, the photographers name to the lower right.
Condition: The image itself is in great vintage condition. Wear is present to corners of the lower border, which can be hidden if framed.
