Antique Hand-Colored Silver Gelatin Photograph of a Woman in a Tropical Outdoor Scene, Circa 1920s
Antique Hand-Colored Silver Gelatin Photograph of a Woman in a Tropical Outdoor Scene, Circa 1920s. This beautiful snapshot of a woman was taken against a backdrop of an elaborately tiled fountain set within a whitewashed wall. The tiles used for the fountain appear to be Talavera Mexican tiles, leading us to believe the photo may have been taken somewhere in Mexico. She stands next to a large-scale bronze bell and very well established Yucca or Agave plant. A large terracotta pot sits to the left, with a hint of a small passageway in the margins of the photograph. The front of the photo has been left unsigned but a small inscription included in pencil on the reverse reads, “Giving this to Lil. She doesn’t know about it. Picture (small snap) has been remarked by everyone and this should look lovely when mounted.” The image itself was taken in black and white, then lovingly hand-colored. Every detail was considered down to the geometric print in the woman’s dress and the heavily patterned tiles used within the fountain. Framed in a minimal dark wood frame with cream mat.
In the style of works by Hugo Brehme, a German-born photographer working out of Mexico during the time this photograph was taken.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minimal wear only to the edges of the frame. The image itself is near perfect, with vibrant colors intact.
