Antique Framed Early Women's Basketball Team Game Snapshot, Circa 1910s
Antique Framed Early Women's Basketball Team Game Snapshot, Circa 1910s. This black and white image was taken shortly after the invention of the sport itself in 1891. Sourced in the Canadian Maritimes, it’s likely that this was a high-school team based in Canada. The image was captured mid-shot, with the crowd and team members hyper-focused on the results. It’s more common to find staged group shots of a team, but quite rare to find an image taken mid-game. The court looks to be located in a congested city area, with brick homes and structures surrounding it. An iron staircase or fire-escape behind the backboard is lined with members of the team. It’s also worth mentioning that the crowd of spectators is primarily made up of women. Unfortunately, there is no identifiable team information. The backing board used to frame this snapshot is also quite interesting. Formed from recycled hand-made signage, the backing advertises a home for sale for $5100. The home was solid brick, 6 rooms with hardwood floors, and asking for $600 downpayment (quite a small sum, compared to today’s rates). Framed in a minimal black painted wood frame with original glass. Unsigned.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with minimal wear to wood frame. The image is in excellent condition, with no fading. There appears to be only minimal wrinkling to image in small areas at the far borders where it meets the frame.
