Rare Antique Brazilian Taxidermy Armadillo Table Lamp with Silk Fringe, Circa 1920s
Rare Antique Brazilian Taxidermy Armadillo Table Lamp with Silk Fringe, Circa 1920s
Rare Antique Brazilian Taxidermy Armadillo Table Lamp with Silk Fringe, Circa 1920s. Designed around an intact armadillo shell with tail and head, this lamp is equal parts shocking and fascinating. In the first half the 20th century, armadillo shells were used as the base for handbags, bowls, instruments and, as with this rare example, lighting. The shade is completely formed from the body of a 9 banded armadillo shell, finished with applied gold silk fringe. The base of the lamp is turned walnut, with a wood framework on the interior of the shade to join both components. This piece retains original paper labels on the underside of the base noting production in Rio De Janeiro, and a retailer named “Florida Bazar.” A rare example of taxidermy lighting.
Condition: Great antique condition. We have lightly restored this piece including reattachment of the head, silk fringe and interior shade framework. While this taxidermy piece is intact with its head, ears and tail, it is almost 100 years old and quite fragile. One small split between two of the body bands (we have reinforced and re-joined this area). Light wood base abrasion as detailed in images. Retains multiple original paper labels on the underside of the base.
Specs: 14 1/4” H | 9 1/4” L | 9” D
