Vintage Great Northern Chair Co. Bentwood Chairs, A Pair, Circa 1920s
Vintage Great Northern Chair Co. Bentwood Chairs, A Pair, Circa 1920s
Vintage Great Northern Chair Co. Bentwood Chairs, A Pair, Circa 1920s. A scarce iteration of the classic bistro style produced by Great Northern Chair Co. of Chicago. These chairs have bentwood frames and unusually heavyweight stacked oak seats. Each is stamped on the underside of the seat with the company’s emblem along with model number 277. It’s likely that these were an earlier production run, as the model number for this style is quite low and most on the market have thinner pressed wood seats.
Founded in 1918 by Joseph Silverman, Great Northern Chair Co. was one of the leading U.S. makers of bentwood chairs. The company ceased operations in 1954, the next year, it was bought out and renamed Shelby Williams Manufacturing Inc.
Sold as a Pair.
Condition: Great vintage condition. Overall wear commensurate with age and use. Light separation to layers of laminated wood backrest, and one small crack in the center of one (does not affect stability, and does not penetrate through all laminated layers). Small areas of paint and abrasion as detailed in images. Both chairs remain strong and stable, with only light movement between joints.
