Antique Folk Art Miniature Painted Wood Cabinet, Circa Early 20th Century
Antique Folk Art Miniature Painted Wood Cabinet, Circa Early 20th Century. Constructed largely from pine, the unit is painted a deep cool gray with vibrant mustard accents. Folk miniatures like this were largely handmade at home, for children, out of scraps of leftover wood. The knobs on the drawers and doors were fashioned from wood thread spools (with branding visible on the ends), cut to size. The cabinet itself is expertly constructed, leaving us to wonder whether the maker could have been a woodworker by trade. Designed with a large lower drawer, two small upper drawers, and a double-door upper compartment with a single central interior shelf. This piece was likely left in a barn or storage area, creating a beautiful alligator surface texture within the paint over time. Adding to the history, an owner of this piece (likely a child) rendered a small illustration of a mouse in pencil on the interior right door. Unsigned.
Sourced in the rural Eastern Canada Maritimes.
Condition: Great antique condition. Natural surface wear + paint crackling commensurate with age and use. A couple small losses along lower portion of the cabinet as pictured. One small wood element has been replaced on the right door lower moulding (blends well and does not detract from the overall look of the piece).
