Vintage Oil on Canvas Painting, "In the Studio," by A. Mark Datz, Circa 1940s-1950s. An active studio scene portraying who we believe to be Datz - himself, at the foreground of the work. The painting illustrates the artist mid-session, palette in hand. A central nude model kneels on a pedestal with a pair of onlookers watching the artist work. An open window in the background shows a vibrant blue sky with billowing curtains rendered in motion.
Labeled, ”A Mark Datz, "In The Studio," oil, 20”x16” (acquired 71). Signed A Mark Datz on the reverse. Earlier Black labeling across top of the canvas stretcher labels the work #153 R “Judgement Day” A Mark Datz “Judgement Day”. It’s possible the title was later changed to “In the Studio.”
The reverse of the work also offers a great deal of information about the artist, including an envelope with his Bronx address, sent from The Art Digest (publishers of Arts Magazine, a prominent American monthly magazine devoted to fine art).
Abraham Mark Datz (b. 1889 Chrenova, Russia - d. NYC 1969) emigrated to the United States in 1903. He is known as a painter, a sculptor, and an etcher. His works are very rarely for sale on the market. Syracuse University maintains a Datz archive and his works are held in many museum collections, including the Whitney Museum and the MET.
Condition: Good vintage condition. This piece is not perfect, and shows signs of wear. Paint loss mainly concentrated towards the bottom of the canvas, and small areas of paint loss at the top. Original, untouched condition, and a rare find by the artist.
