Antique Framed Before / After Marriage Ambigram Etching by John Kay, Circa 1877. A humorous black and white etched ambigram of a couple, facing one another in profile during in two states of their lives, before and after marriage. The art can flipped to reveal either state of the marriage, with a youthful, joyous depiction in the before - buoyed with a haggard depiction of the couple’s faces in the “after” state.
The original plate was produced circa 1789 and printed in the 1877 publication, ‘A Series of Original Portraits and Caricature Etchings by the late John Kay, Miniature Painter, Edinburgh, Vol. 1.” Published by Adam and Charles Black, Edinburgh 1877.
Paired with an a-frame gold-painted pine easel.

Condition: Artwork is in excellent antique condition for its age, recently reframed in-house with a vintage frame. Easel and frame show light signs of wear along edges commensurate with age and use (as pictured)
